Design Framework

Design

Learning by a design approach is another explorative process where students are posed with a technological challenge or problem. Students seek out a solution by trying to design some working device. (x) In doing so, students identify what they need to learn or do, what level they are able to work at as well as other constraints they they must work around to ultimately create the artifact. Like inquiry, significant attention is placed on activities that students must work through to share experiences with each other, justify ideas with evidence, explain results and work towards presenting the final product or even utilizing the produce as part of some activist movement.

For example, students might be confronted with the problem of lead being used in young children’s toys which could lead to lead poisoning. They decide to meet this challenge by building some alterntative toy that does contain lead but some safer element or compound. In the process, they also learn about lead and the body. They identify and work around limitations such as class time and financial constraints. Later, they try to sell their toys at a market to raise awareness on this issue.

Like inquiry, design allows students to develop important higher-order skills. For instance, they learn how to transfer knowledge through the context of the artifact or issue involved. (x). Students also are often more motivated to learn through a design approach as it often involves –choice- (ex. what to design) and is centred around an authentic problem, often very relevant to the student.
