Knowledge Building Framework

Knowledge Building

Knowledge building is a communal way of constructing ideas about matters of science and the world. It often incorporates other learning processes such as  inquiry or design whose implementation can serve as an influence if not source for the ideas generated in knowledge building.  Knowledge bulding ultimately involves the presentation of ideas to a group or collective -as- a group or collective. Moreover, such knowledge is actively debated on its validity and such discussion often leads to more searching and debate in a continuous and ongoing fashion.

To give an example in the context of school, students are curious to know why and how a plant’s leaves change colour in the winter. So the students use an online blog site to post ideas on what they think happens. After dialogue and further injection of other ideas and resources by the teacher, they come to the realization there is something unique in the leaves. In turn, they do various experiments and learn about chlorophyll. Later, they pool their insights in further reflection. Eventually, they come to the realization that chlorophyll is a pigment that gives leaves their green colour. The colder temperature in the winter somehow makes it "go away". They also learn how valuable chlorophyll is from other discussions. Without it, plants would not be able to make energy which could have huge effects on the environment.
