General Problem Solving Framework

General Problem Solving

General problem solving is a broader approach to learning. Like design, it is centered around some problem and participants seek to overcome it. However, solving the problem does not necessarily entail creating some technology (although it could). Rather, solutions could be obtained in a variety of ways such as merely doing research, persuading another party or changing one’s daily habits. What is important like any framework-oriented approach is the process itself. Students learn -how- to develop ideas in order to solve the problem. In turn, they act upon their ideas to develop strategies for addressing the problem. Then, they implement their strategies to come closer to arriving at a solution (if even possible).

For instance, students might role play a disaster scenario where the sun is about burn out. They next discuss ideas on how so survive in a world without a sun. In the process, they also research and carry out other activities to learn more about other sources of energy. Eventually they decide on a strategy that involves their re-location to low level volcanic area that is rich in geothermic energy. For fun, they put on a skit that describes their journey and re-location to their new home.

Problem solving  also involves collaboration among students. (Two heads are usually better than one at solving a problem) In the process, the general problem solving approach gives students great opportunity to exercise critical thinking skills to evaluate their ideas and strategies (x). As well, problem solving often involves research, allowing students to gain better mastery in the areas of locating information in text or on the web and in citing information.
